Checkpoint Theatre was founded in 2002 by its three Joint Artistic Directors: Casey Lim (a video artist, director, and composer), Claire Wong (a director and actress), and Huzir Sulaiman (a playwright, actor and director). Chiu Chien Seen joined the board of directors soon after.

Checkpoint's focus is on the marriage of strong writing and acting - the traditional foundations of theatre - to the creative aesthetics of new media and technology.

With rigorous technique, Checkpoint makes art with a strong sense of craft, respecting the intelligence of audiences and challenging them aesthetically. Connecting in ways both beautiful and intellectually honest.

The work is varied in theme and form: socio-political satire, explorations of history and memory, verse texts, chamber opera, collaborations with regional artists, rapid-fire comedy, powerful music and arresting imagery. All united by an attention to detail and integrity of performance.
